• Dutch Evangelicals calls for pray-in against the Devil (A Netherlands-based Evangelical organisation has called on Christians in 21 countries to hold a 24-hour prayer vigil against Satanic forces to mark so-called Devil's Day.)

• 666: The number of the beast (and, gulp, today's date) (According to Revelations, they are the devil's own digits. They have even been used to 'prove' that Nero and Ronald Reagan were Satan in disguise. So it is little wonder Doomsday obsessives believe the world will end today. Oliver Duff reports)

• EU Begins Package Talks With Iran (European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana is in Iran to present a package of incentives and penalties aimed at getting the country to end its uranium enrichment program.)

ISRAEL HAPPENINGS:

• Anti-Missile System Beefed Up against Iranian Threat (Israel is working on an upgraded version of its Arrow Mark IV anti-missile system in the wake of the growing threat from Iran, according to Defense Week. Jerusalem has asked the United States for $58 million to speed up production of the Arrow anti-missile.)

• IDF intelligence warns conflict with Palestinians to escalate (According to the assessment, army intelligence officials believe Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's ambitious plan to withdraw from large parts of the West Bank will not do anything to decrease the scope of daily violence in the region. Instead, the army is moving forward based on a working plan that it is nearing another round of bloody violence with the Palestinians.)

• Rabbinic Court slams High Court (Two recent Supreme Court decisions that have curtailed rabbinic court jurisdiction "have given the religious community the feeling that Israel's highest court is antagonistic towards Jewish law," said legal adviser to the rabbinic courts Rabbi Shimon Ya'acobi during a conference on the relations between religious courts and civil law at the University of Haifa.)

MEDICAL BREAKTHROUGHS:

• How Low Should Cholesterol Go? (They [researchers] believe the increase in statin dose required to reach these low cholesterol levels -- more than eight-times higher than doses used today -- would result in significantly more adverse side effects from the drugs and might even outweigh any benefits seen in lower heart disease risks.)

• One-Two Punch for Lung Cancer (In their study, about 33 percent of patients responded to the combination treatment. Typically, only about 10 percent of lung cancer patients respond to Tarveca alone. The addition of Celebrex is believed to up the efficacy of Tarveca because it inhibits the COX-2 cell signaling pathway. That pathway has been linked to resistance to Tarveca, which blocks the growth of tumor cells by targeting a protein known as the epidermal growth factor receptor, or EGFR.)

• And here is another HUGE help.  It's what my brother-in-law, Steve, who is an ex-smoker, turned me on to.  It's called Commit tablets.  But a smoker who is trying to quit needs to limit oneself to no more than one tablet every 3 hours (for the 4 mg tablets).  It really does help, and I have been a smoker for 35 years...
