Buying Time
I hear from many FTK subscribers how much they value the information we send out every week for free. If you also feel this way and would like to share the FTK with others, click here and sign up your friends: FTK@Ivanhoe.com. Everybody who responds this week will be put in a drawing to receive one lifetime membership to the Archives.
A vacuum cleaner for the brainstarts off this week’s reports, providing a new tool for removing blood clots from stroke patients’ brains. Restoring blood flow in 82-percent of the patients in a recent study, with 60-percent responding better neurologically, the “Penumbra” buys doctors five more hours to cut the patients’ risk of death and disability. Another new device buying doctors more time is the Berlin Heart, which takes over for the young patient’s heart and allows it to rest as the child awaits transplant surgery. It comes in different sizes - small enough to treat a six pound baby and large enough for a teen. According to our report, it will take the FDA as much as three years to approve the Berlin Heart, even though it’s been used successfully in Europe since 1992. Why can’t we come up with a way to speed up this process?
On a “warm, fuzzy” note, there has been FDA approval on a new device which is helping knees repair themselves– with the FDA approval awarded because of successful research done with healing dogs’ knees. Read the story from the University of Missouri about how Steve Kane, M.D. and Jimi Cook, DVM, Ph.D. have found a way to provide blood supply to a meniscus tear which can then heal itself in less than 12 weeks. Also involving our canine friends is our report on Autism Assistance Dogs. Though quite expensive at $13,000 each, these specially trained dogs are helping improve the quality of life for kids with autism spectrum disorder.
Improving the quality of the air is the topic of our report from the University of Virginia, where for the first time, researchers are actually able to see the lung damage in non-smokers that has occurred as a result of exposure to secondhand smoke. Take a look at what secondhand smoke has been linked to in kids and adults, and how to minimize your risk to this dangerous substance. And if you know of anyone who wants to increase their odds of having a baby from freezing one’s eggs, don’t miss our In-Depth Doctor’s Interview with Michael Tucker, Ph.D. about vitrification.
