Hooked!

Call me a romantic if you want to, but my favorite movie has always been “Gone with the Wind.” In fact, I watched it again just a couple of weeks ago, and found out that today is the 72nd anniversary of Margaret Mitchell’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel!

We’ve heard that eyes are the “windows to the soul,” but it seems that they may also be a “window into the body,” according to Rafat Ansari, Ph.D., professor of ophthalmology at the University of Texas. Take a look at this week’s story to find out how he’s scanning the eyes to record nutrient levels throughout the body and detecting cataracts much more swiftly than traditional tests.

We’ve also heard a lot lately about the question of whether vaccines for children have something to do with the rise of autism, but today’s report is about the dangers of parents skipping vaccines for their kids, something that has doubled in the past five years. Read what Dr. Mike Jordan has to say about the “opting out” parents are choosing, and how he’s concerned about the reemergence of the illnesses they are trying to prevent whenever there’s a drop in people getting vaccinations. Also make sure you see our story about the on-going study Moffitt Cancer Center is doing on educating caregivers. There’s some excellent advice we should all follow as we take care of ourselves, whether or not we’re caretaking for someone else.

If you’ve always associated crocheting with little old ladies, you’ll definitely want to check out our report from UCLA, especially if you’re one of the twenty-five million Americans with varicose veins. Read about the study of quick varicose vein removal which has had excellent outcomes using a most unusual tool - crochet hooks. I’m glad researchers have found a way to use crochet hooks, because I never could! Also having excellent results are the hyperbaric oxygen chamber LSU researchers are using for traumatic brain injury patients which helps stimulate the brain to repair itself, and the new electrical stimulation device that is helping stroke patients walk again. Check out this week’s In-Depth Doctor’s Interview with physical therapist, Tracy Saponara, to learn more about the Bioness L300 and how it helps bring muscle activity back a few days faster.

By the way, I recently heard Paul Rademacher, the new executive director of The Monroe Institute, speak about the Institute’s on-going research and programs using Hemi-Sync ® sound technology for balancing left and right brain activity and for exploring altered states of consciousness. If you’re interested in learning more about their offerings or attending a program, click here: www.MonroeInstitute.org. One of my favorite parts of the Gateway Program I attended in the early 90s was hearing famed remote viewer, Joe McMoneagle, speak www.mceagle.com, which I understand he’s still doing for some of the Institute programs.
