Turning Things Around

Your opinion and ideas are meaningful to us at Ivanhoe. We've made several improvements and additions over the years based on First to Know subscriber responses. We're considering adding a special section about the latest research on the brain and how to keep it functioning at the highest level. Specifically, how concerned are you about losing your memory, having dementia or Alzheimer's as you age? No names or emails will ever be disclosed. Please click here to take the survey.

This week we have news from Shepherd Center in Atlanta on how technology is turning disability into ability. Read the story to learn how patients with paralyzing spinal cord injuries are getting some control back. Doctors at the University of Miami are also turning things around by using a safer, more effective alternative for treating cervical cancer. Not only does the “Gynocyte” device deliver a very intense amount of radiation to the tumor with only minor damage to nearby tissue, it has a 90 percent cure rate, compared to the old device’s 60-70 percent cure rate. And helping kids turn things around who are born with a concave chest, Nicholas, Fiore, M.D. tells us in our report from Nevada about the new surgical method which does not require open chest surgery, and has a recovery time of days instead of months.

One of my favorite stories this week is from Florida Hospital about organ donation that involves a database which matches donor pairs, even if the intended recipient of each donor is incompatible with the donor. Not only will this new approach vastly increase the number of patients receiving organs, they’ll receive them from a living donor. This is far better for the patient, such as in the case of kidney transplants, which from a living donor last about five years longer than those from a deceased donor. And on a totally different topic, if you’ve ever worried about cell phones giving you cancer (I certainly have), whether brain cells re-grow, or if cold weather causes colds in children, make sure you see our story about debunking medical myths.

Finally, my husband and I and our two dogs leave for Calgary tomorrow by way of St. Michael’s, Maryland, and Southport, Maine. Nothing like heading northeast to go northwest!

And there's more where that came from...
