Measuring Up

While Americans celebrated the United States’ 232nd birthday last week, I enjoyed my 8th Canada Day Celebration in Calgary, where they commemorated the 141st birthday of the confederation of Upper and Lower Canada and some of the Maritime Provinces into the Dominion of Canada. Now I’m caught up in the Calgary Stampede!

Getting caught up in the quest for beauty is the topic of a two-part series produced by our own Melissa Medalie. With a 450-percent increase in the number of cosmetic procedures over the past ten years as people try to measure up to their ideal of beauty, make sure you read about the knifeless plastic surgery now available, and about the dangers of plastic surgery and what you need to know before heading into the operating room.

In this week’s story from Phoenix, it seems some surgeons are playing video games to help them prepare for the operating room. Check out the report to learn how Nintendo Wii is helping improve doctor’s skills by 50-percent and how much money could be saved by this fine motor skills training. Also take a look at this week’s In-Depth Doctor’s Interview with Peter F. Lawrence, M.D., who explains how he uses crochet hooks in light-assisted stab phlebectomy (LASP), a new procedure for removing varicose veins.

On a totally different topic, do you know what to watch for in terms of healthy and not-so-healthy choices for fast food eating? Which do you think will save you 220 calories and 18 grams of fat - a Burger King Whopper with cheese or a McDonald’s Big Mac? Which is more fattening measure for measure - two slices of Domino’s large cheese pizza or two slices of Pizza Hut large cheese pizza? To find out, read our story or read David Zinczenko’s book, Eat This, Not That.

Finally, for all you weight-conscious people, see what nutrition and wellness expert, Ann Kulze, M.D., has to say about which are the best and worst diet foods, and how the once popular, fat-free foods have lost steam. Also in the story is a link to her list of diet tips and traps.

And there's more where that came from...
