Are We Alone In The Milky Way? 'Multi Or Rare' Earth Debate
"There are maybe 30 million species on the planet today—10 to 30 million. If we look at the fossils, there are hundreds of millions of species in the past. And one time on Earth has intelligence arisen to the point where we can build a radio telescope (which is the definition of intelligence to a radio astronomer). One time out of hundreds of millions of possibilities. That's an astronomically small number of intelligences that have arisen—just one." Peter Ward -paleontologist and professor of Biology and of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington. The "Rare Earth" hypothesis is the idea that life is a staggeringly unlikely event, and that the reason we haven't seen hide nor hair (nor scale nor weird gel-layer) of aliens is that there aren't any.  It's had some time in the spotlight, it makes us sound very important, and it's wrong.

Church Universal And Triumphant Leader Elizabeth Clare Prophet Doesn't Live To See Armageddon
In the late 1980s, church members amassed assault rifles and armored vehicles in preparation for a nuclear missile strike that Prophet predicted was on the way. The plan brought national notoriety and a federal investigation. The church's beliefs combined icons from the world's major religions, mixing western philosophy and mysticism. Despite her disease, videos and writings of Prophet continued to dominate church teaching, transformed into a New Age publishing enterprise and spiritual university. The church was still prepared for Armageddon in recent years, and kept a bomb shelter stocked for 750 people deep in a forest near Yellowstone National Park. Gone are the weapons amassed in the late 1980s that got church leaders into trouble with federal authorities. The church declined in the 1990s, after a doomsday prediction never materialized and Prophet's charismatic presence faded, but lived on with a smaller group of adherents and workers.

Lynn Marzulli Calls New Fatima Movie "Deception A-Go-Go"
According to those who witnessed it, the Virgin Mary appeared to three children on October 13. Upwards of 70,000 people had waited for her appearance and the promised sign all morning. It had been raining all day and most of the people were soaked as they stood in the muddy field, waiting for something to happen. At one o'clock the children cried, "There she is!" They then knelt in front of the oak tree, as the apparition, which they alone could see, appeared to them. While this was occurring the much debated "Miracle of the Sun," occurred. According to witnesses the sun descended from its place, in the sky and began to descend, pendulum like, toward earth. People who were there thought it was the en of the world. As the "sun" went slowly back to it place, people noticed that there clothes had been dried and others proclaimed that they had been healed of diseases.

Creationists Say Science and Bible Disprove 'Ardi' Fossil Is Evidence of Evolution
But despite the excitement from the paleontology community, another group of researchers, many of them with advanced degrees in science, are unimpressed by Ardi, who they believe is just another ape -- an ape of indeterminate age, they add, and an ape who cannot be an ancestor of modern man for a range of reasons, including one of singular importance: God created man in one day, and evolution is a fallacy.

God vs. Science Isn't the Issue
When the poet Matthew Arnold wrote of faith's "melancholy, long, withdrawing roar," the thought was that scientific inquiry had forever undermined claims to certitude. In hindsight we see Arnold was only half right. In place of Genesis we now have scientism—the idea that science alone can speak truth about man and his world. In contrast to the majority of scientists whose wondrous discoveries seem to inspire humility, today's advocates of scientism can be every bit as dogmatic as the William Jennings Bryans of yesteryear. We saw an example a week ago, when the New York Times reported that many scientists view "outspoken religious commitment as a sign of mild dementia." The reporter was Gardiner Harris, and the object of his snark was Francis Collins—the new director of the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Collins is perhaps best noted for his leadership on the Human Genome Project, an effort to map the genetic makeup of man. But he is also well known for his unapologetic talk about his Christian faith and how he came to it.

Calling Michael Heiser! Old Testament Scholar Says God Not The Creator According To The Bible
Professor Ellen van Wolde, a respected Old Testament scholar and author, claims the first sentence of Genesis "in the beginning God created the Heaven and the Earth" is not a true translation of the Hebrew. She claims she has carried out fresh textual analysis that suggests the writers of the great book never intended to suggest that God created the world -- and in fact the Earth was already there when he created humans and animals. Prof Van Wolde, 54, who will present a thesis on the subject at Radboud University in The Netherlands where she studies, said she had re-analysed the original Hebrew text and placed it in the context of the Bible as a whole, and in the context of other creation stories from ancient Mesopotamia. She said she eventually concluded the Hebrew verb "bara", which is used in the first sentence of the book of Genesis, does not mean "to create" but to "spatially separate". The first sentence should now read "in the beginning God separated the Heaven and the Earth" According to Judeo-Christian tradition, God created the Earth out of nothing.

Bishops See "Divine Plan" Operating Behind Obama
African bishops attending a Vatican meeting are speaking about the election of Barack Obama in divine terms—putting them very much at odds with many of their U.S. counterparts. Archbishop Gabriel Charles Palmer-Buckle of Accra, Ghana said Wednesday that there was "a divine plan behind" Obama's election. "It's like the biblical story repeating itself," he told reporters, citing the Old Testament figure Joseph, who after being sold into slavery in Egypt ends up becoming a top official.  "We believe God has his own plans. God directs history," he said of the U.S. election. "We pray that it (Obama's presidency) brings blessings for Africa and the whole world." He acknowledged that Obama has earned the wrath of many conservative American bishops because of his support for abortion rights. Earlier this year, dozens of U.S. bishops denounced the leading U.S. Catholic university, Notre Dame, for giving Obama an honorary degree.

Wife Of Japanese PM Brings UFOs, Aliens Into Global Affairs
There was a happy face lost in Friday’s hubbub over President Barack Obama’s complete whiz down his leg of America’s efforts to snag the 2016 Olympics. While Oprah trashed her hotel room after the International Olympic Committee told her and Mrs. Obama to go pound sand, Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama was still on hand to lobby Tokyo’s case for the games. Brazil walked away the winner last week, but the event gave the entire world its first up close and personal look at a woman who’s been entertaining the Japanese people for years. Hatoyama Miyuki is the wife of Japan’s PM — a former actress whose comments and behavior seem more appropriate for a woman in a tinfoil hat with 42 cats than the wife of a head of state. In several interviews written up just after her husband’s recent ascension to power, Hatoyama explained that she has met with aliens who transported her spirit to Venus while she slept. She offers a full account of the experience in her new book, Very Strange Things I’ve Encountered.

Mprize Temptation: Your Children Could Be Immortal
If living forever isn’t enough motivation to get scientists to study longevity, maybe $3.8 million will work instead. That’s the current size of the Mprize, a special fund put forth by the Methuselah Foundation that seeks to encourage research into extending healthy human life. The prize is awarded to those scientists who can increase the lifespan of lab mice in the hopes that work performed on that species can be readily applied to humans. Can we live longer? Do we even want to? When will the average human life expectancy start to increase by more than a year each year? The Methuselah Foundation’s answers are yes, yes, and much sooner than you might think. Check out Aubrey De Grey’s discussion of longevity at TED 2005 in the video after the break. He’s very enthusiastic to say the least. The history of offering a cash prize to help motivate research has a long and successful history. Mariners were finally able to determine their longitude at sea thanks to the aptly named Longitude Prize offered by the British government. Lindbergh’s transatlantic flight was in direct response to the Orteig prize. The modern day Xprize is inspiring new achievements in genomics, space flight, lunar exploration, and transportation efficiency. With the Mprize, the Methuselah Foundation may very well bring about a surge in the interest in increasing human lifespans within the next generation.

The Secret Mysteries Of Dan Brown: Guess Who's Been Watching This 3-Part DVD Set
“The Lost Symbol,” which is the latest book from Dan Brown (author of the DaVinci Code) has been long awaited.  In fact, it has been reported that this book would be forthcoming for several years now; yet it’s been delayed a number of times.  Why?  Is it possible that Brown encountered information that caused him to rethink his overall storyline? Some researchers, having seen our series, “Secret Mysteries of America’s Beginnings,” are starting to think Brown based his book, in part, on our documentaries.  Normally, I would be more skeptical about the suggestion, but there is more to this than just the fact that Brown mentions Sir Francis Bacon, The New Atlantis, Aleister Crowley, Freemasonry, Rosicrucianism, the Hermetic Maxim (‘as above, so below’) and many other details that we include in our films. Certainly, these are themes that he could have obtained elsewhere.  But then, the Associated Press reported in an article on Brown’s new book that: “The plot centers in part on an ‘unfair’ anti-Masonic video that ‘conspiracy theorists would feed on … like sharks,’…”

Dawkins & Sagan: "Will the Universe Be the New Religion?"
In his classic on the place of planet earth in the universe, Pale Blue Dot, Carl Sagan asked how is it that hardly any major religion has looked at science and said "This is better than we thought. The Universe is much bigger than our prophets said, grander, more subtle, more elegant. Instead they say, 'No. no. no! My god is a little god, and I want him to stay that way." Carl Sagan dreamed of a world where a new religion that stressed the wonder and awe and magnificence of the Universe as revealed by science "might be able to draw forth reserves of reverence and awe hardly tapped by the conventional faiths." In a similar vein, Evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins debates physicist Lawrence Krauss ("The Physics of Star Trek") asks and answers some of the big questions about religion and our existence on Earth.  A key focus is the impact of Darwin and "The Origin of the Species" on modern thought. Dawkins is the Charles Simonyi Professor of the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University. He first came to prominence with his 1976 book The Selfish Gene, which popularized the gene-centered view of evolution and introduced the term meme into the lexicon.

The Degenerating Human Race
Many people have a view of evolution as a progressive, upward movement toward perfection. Evolution, they feel, means that everything is getting better over time. Serious evolutionists would disagree with that interpretation. Instead, they see evolution as simply the process by which organisms become better adapted to their environments, whether or not that adaption looks like a step upward.

Freemasons Look To Build Presence On College Campus
A new fraternal organization is surfacing on GW's campus, and this time there will be no Greek letters involved. A group of GW alumni that believe in the teachings of the Masonic people are looking to start a Freemason Lodge on campus, said Paul Nadeau, a 2004 graduate of the Elliott School of International Affairs. A Freemason Lodge is not a literal building, Nadeau said, but rather it is a chapter of Freemason people, similar to a fraternal organization.

Fatima And The Turbulence Of Our Times
It was the afternoon of the Sunday before the Feast of Ascension, and the three children — Lucia Santos and her younger cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto — had just attended Mass and enjoyed a picnic lunch. Lucia, a rather plain-looking ten year-old, and her two cousins came from typically pious, hard-working, hardscrabble rural Portuguese backgrounds. Their lives and their Catholic faith were closely intertwined, as had been the case for countless generations of Portuguese farmers before them. It is unlikely that they had been much affected by the revolutionary, anti-religious posture of the government in Lisbon; in those days, the militant secularism that has become the signature characteristic of our age was mostly an urban phenomenon, both in Portugal and elsewhere. Life in Aljustrel and Fatima in 1917 was little different than it had been a century, or two centuries, earlier. According to the children’s later report, their play was interrupted by a flash of brilliant light.

Scientists Propose New Hypothesis On The Origin Of Life
Armen Mulkidjanian of the University of Osnabrueck, Germany and Michael Galperin of the U.S. National Institutes of Health present their hypothesis and evidence in two papers published and open for review in the web site Biology Direct. The scientists suggest that life on Earth originated at photosynthetically-active porous structures, similar to deep-sea hydrothermal vents, made of zinc sulfide (more commonly known as phosphor). They argue that under the high pressure of a carbon-dioxide-dominated atmosphere, zinc sulfide structures could form on the surface of the first continents, where they had access to sunlight. Unlike many existing theories that suggest UV radiation was a hindrance to the development of life, Mulkidjanian and Galperin think it actually helped. “The problem of the origin of life is such that you have to answer a set of different questions to explain how life has originated,” says lead author Mulkidjanian. “We just provide answers to the problem of energetics of the origin of life.”

Is Detection By An Exo Civilization A Threat To Us? World's Experts Debate
Mankind has always been driven by contradictory drives.  The relentless curiosity that pushes us forward and is directly responsible for our progress from caves to  cities.  The fear of change that tells us "hang on, these caves/cities are really nice, we don't want to risk losing them."  There isn't any greater potential threat to the status quo than the discovery of extraterrestrial life, which is why some people would prefer we didn't try. There has been some outrage recently over attempts to contact intelligent aliens, where instead of hiding in the corner and listening real hard some astronomers beamed intense directional messages up up and away.  Critics decried these actions as dangerous, though their fears reveal more about us than any eventual ETs.  They assume that they would be similar to humanity, so their first response to finding a more primitive culture would be to exploit the hell out of it.  While such a fate might be pleasingly ironic (for anyone who isn't human, at least), others contend that any species that can make the journey here has advanced to a point where their goals are rather higher-minded than "Shoot us".

The Next 200 Years: Are Modern Humans Evolving Faster?
In a fascinating discovery that counters a common theory that human evolution has slowed to a crawl or even stopped in modern humans, a study examining data from an international genomics project describes the past 40,000 years as a time of supercharged evolutionary change, driven by exponential population growth and cultural shifts. The findings may lead to a very broad rethinking of human evolution, especially in the view that modern culture has essentially relaxed the need for physical genetic changes in humans to improve survival. A team led by University of Wisconsin-Madison anthropologist John Hawks estimates that positive selection just in the past 5,000 years alone -dating back to the Stone Age - has occurred at a rate roughly 100 times higher than any other period of human evolution. Many of the new genetic adjustments are occurring around changes in the human diet brought on by the advent of agriculture, and resistance to epidemic diseases that became major killers after the growth of human civilizations.

Scientists: Your DNA Connected To Your "Inner Reptilian"
About that hissing sound in your ear? In the early 19th century a startling discovery was made that proved Darwin's theory of evolution before he ever dreamed of joining the voyage of the Beagle. This discovery was made by a German biologist, Karl Reichert, who to his great astonishment found that two of the ear bones in mammals are the same thing as parts of the jaw bones in reptiles. In short, two of the ear bones in mammals -including homo sapiens- came from the gill arch that formed the jaw of a reptile. In his brilliant bestseller, Your Inner Fish: A Journey into the 3.5 Billion Year  History of the Human Body, paleontologist, Neil Shibun, by examining fossils and DNA shows how our hands evolved from fish fins, our heads are organized like long-extinct jawless fish, and how major segments of our human genome look and function like those or worms and bacteria.

LIGO Listens for Gravitational Echoes of Birth of the Universe
An investigation by the LIGO ( Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory ) Scientific Collaboration and the Virgo Collaboration has significantly advanced our understanding of the early evolution of the universe. Analysis of data taken over a two-year period, from 2005 to 2007, has set the most stringent limits yet on the amount of gravitational waves that could have come from the Big Bang in the gravitational wave frequency band where LIGO can observe. In doing so, the gravitational-wave scientists have put new constraints on the details of how the universe looked in its earliest moments.

Planet Of The Apes? Pondering Advanced ET
Charley Lineweaver, a cosmologist with The Australian National University, believes the science behind the movie "Planet of the Apes" is based on a flawed notion of evolution, a notion that could have serious implications for our search for intelligent life elsewhere in the Milky Way Galaxy. Lineweaver calls this notion the "Planet of the Apes Hypothesis" -a theory subscribed to by Carl Sagan and the astronomers involved with the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), that human-like intelligence is a convergent feature of evolution  -- that there is an intelligence niche, into which other species (apes in the movie) will evolve if the human species goes extinct. Let's take a quick look at the plot of the 1968 movie, "Planet of the Apes," with Charlton Heston playing the role of Taylor, an astronaut on an interstellar journey. After traveling for over two thousand years at nearly the speed of light (during which the astronaut crew ages only 18 months due to time dilation), the spacecraft crash lands on a planet that has oxygen comprising 20 percent of the atmosphere, and a 23 hour 56 minute sidereal period.

Zeroing In On How Life Arose From Nonliving Molecules
How did life on Earth begin? An giant step toward solving this puzzle was taken in the 1980's with the  Nobel Prize–winning discovery by Tom Cech and Sidney Altman that RNA, the sister molecule of DNA, can catalyze certain chemical reactions inside cells, a job previously thought to be the exclusive domain of proteins. Until their discovery, RNA was thought to have just one function: storing the genetic information cells need to build proteins.  This new revelation about RNA's dual role suggested to some scientists, including Harvard's Jack Szostak, that RNA likely existed long before DNA or proteins because it might be able to catalyze its own reproduction. Their discovery made it easier to think about how life began, Szostak says. "They inspired me to try to think of ways to make RNAs in the lab that could catalyze their own replication."

Without naming anyone specifically in the 10-minute conference call, Obama said opponents had been spreading lies. "I know that there's been a lot of misinformation in this debate and there are some folks out there who are, frankly, bearing false witness," Obama said.

The Universe In A Test Tube?
"In effect, we have made a universe in a test tube," Richard Haley -Lancaster University. A "universe in a test tube" that could be used to prove theories of everything has been created by physicists using liquid helium and a magnetic field to build a finger-sized representation of the early cosmos. The low-temperature team at Great Britain's Lancaster University may have found a laboratory test of the ‘untestable’ string theory, made popular by Brian Greene at Columbia University. Within string theory, a brane is a large surface embedded in higher dimensional space — our Universe could occupy such a brane. The findings of the Lancaster University team according to nature.com  could help string theorists to refine their models. A popular theory amongst string theorists is that inflation was caused by the collision of two 'branes'. A brane (derived from the word 'membrane') is a three-dimensional object suspended in a higher-dimensional space. One tenet of string theory is that a collision between a brane and an antibrane could have triggered the Big Bang itself and drove inflation of the universe.

Big-Budget Legion Also Hopes To Confuse, Prep For Antichrist
The trailer for an upcoming fantasy-thriller film on the Apocalypse hit the web this past week, presenting movie fans with the question “What if God lost faith in mankind?” “The last time God lost faith in man, He sent the flood. This time, He sent angels,” states the archangel Michael, played Paul Bettany (“The Da Vinci Code”). Directed by visual effects guru Scott Stewart (“Iron Man,” “Night at the Museum,” “Superman Returns”), “Legion” pits mankind against a horde of the devil’s minions – fallen angels, whom God allows to have their way with humanity after having lost faith in it. Also thrown in the mix is Bettany’s character, who apparently decides to break the chains that bind him to God and take a stand with mankind while protecting one woman’s unborn child – “the only hope humanity has of surviving.” “It’s part action movie, it’s part supernatural thriller, it’s part horror movie. There’s some good character drama in it. It’s about some big ideas, about some scary stuff...

Building Block Of Life Found On Comet
The amino acid glycine, a fundamental building block of proteins, has been found in a comet for the first time, bolstering the theory that raw ingredients of life arrived on Earth from outer space, scientists said on Monday. Microscopic traces of glycine were discovered in a sample of particles retrieved from the tail of comet Wild 2 by the NASA spacecraft Stardust deep in the solar system some 242 million miles (390 million km) from Earth, in January 2004. Samples of gas and dust collected on a small dish lined with a super-fluffy material called aerogel were returned to Earth two years later in a canister that detached from the spacecraft and landed by parachute in the Utah desert.

The building blocks are strung together and doing that is actually easier than making the building blocks themselves," he said.

He says, "Jesus will never come and appear in the clouds" as most christians believe. He also tells anyone who will listen that the word Antichrist is a mistranslation. That indeed Jesus was supposed to come again incarnate in a person. Today that person, according to Jose Miranda is him.

The Bible Under Attack
One way we can recognize where the devil is as work is in the attack on the Word of God, the Bible. This seems to be coming at us from all directions – in both conservative and liberal factions of the visible church. There’s nothing new under the sun; Satan has always cast doubt upon God’s Word in an effort to deceive God’s people.

India's 'Destroyer of Sin' awash in filth
Among believers, the river has many names: The Pure. Destroyer of Sin. Light Amid the Darkness of Ignorance. But mostly they call it "Ganga Ma" -- Mother Ganges -- and they worship it with a blinding intensity. They worship it despite the islands of garbage that float down its path, and the tons of chemicals dumped in it. They worship it despite the one billion liters (quarter of a billion gallons) of sewage poured into it every day, spreading illness among the 350 million people -- some one-twentieth of the world's population -- who live in its watershed.

Physicists Find Way To 'See' Extra Dimensions
A new study demonstrates that the shapes of extra dimensions can be "seen" by deciphering their influence on cosmic energy released by the violent birth of the universe 13 billion years ago. The method, published today (Feb. 2) in Physical Review Letters, provides evidence that physicists can use experimental data to discern the nature of these elusive dimensions - the existence of which is a critical but as yet unproven element of string theory, the leading contender for a unified "theory of everything."
