Meteor roars over area with light and
noise
Jan. 5, 2005
On
Tuesday evening there was light where there should be none and noise where
quiet should have reigned.
Antigo and Langlade County were apparently in the path of a meteor that
brought reports of the strange happenings from South Dakota across central
Wisconsin.
Motorists who were traversing area roads reported the bright light in the sky
at about 6:15 p.m., and there were sounds that had people answering unknocked
doors and peering into yards to determine who or what was lurking outside
their homes.
The calls to local law enforcement agencies started at about 6:12 p.m. with
reports that a meteor had gone down in the Neva area and near the Langlade-Lincoln
County line. But as far anyone knows, there is no evidence that the meteor
came to earth.
Many people heard the noise and some saw the light and in some cases, homes
rattled as the meteor passed.
Area law enforcement agencies made contact with the Federal Aviation
Administration at the Minneapolis airport to determine what was going on, and
the tower personnel said they had taken reports from an aircraft flying at
31,000 feet south of Eau Claire and another from a pilot outside of Souix
Falls, S.D. Both reported bright flashes of light in the sky.
The Lincoln County Sheriff's Department, in a news release entitied
"x-files info," noted that loggers working in the area of the
Taylor-Lincoln County line reported seeing the flow of a fire in the woods but
were unable to find the source of the light.
No damage ‹ only surprised people ‹ was reported.
