Cash For Clunkers Program A Perfect Illustration Of Government Bureaucracy: Taxpayers Paid $24,000 Per Worthless Car
A total of 690,000 new vehicles were sold under the Cash for Clunkers program last summer, but only 125,000 of those were vehicles that would not have been sold anyway, according to an analysis released Wednesday by the automotive Web site Edmunds.com. Still, auto sales contributed heavily to the economy's expansion in the third quarter, adding 1.7 percentage points to the nation's gross domestic product growth. The Cash for Clunkers program gave car buyers rebates of up to $4,500 if they traded in less fuel-efficient vehicles for new vehicles that met certain fuel economy requirements. A total of $3 billion was allotted for those rebates. The average rebate was $4,000. But the overwhelming majority of sales would have taken place anyway at some time in the last half of 2009, according to Edmunds.com. That means the government ended up spending about $24,000 each for those 125,000 additional vehicle sales.

Swift And Supersized FDA Enforcement
Public, highly visible, and swift FDA enforcement—something skeptics say the device industry lacks—is coming under the new leadership at the agency. It was stressed by agency commissioner Margaret Hamburg at the Regulatory Affairs Professionals Society’s (RAPS) annual meeting in Philadelphia in September, and simultaneously by career FDAers at a downtown Washington industry meeting the same day. “It’s a new day at FDA,” declared CDRH compliance director Timothy A. Ulatowski. “We’re going to ‘crank it up’ [i.e., the process of taking necessary regulatory actions].

US Military prepares to close all borders under H1N1 national emergency
The idea of closing borders for health and security reasons is nothing new. Many countries have elected to close borders to protect their populations from viruses, security threats, and other external dangers. An example recently has been the brief closure of the Mexican border when the H1N1, or Swine Flu virus, was realized to have originated from a small Mexican town. The virus spread quicker than authorities anticipated and led the Mexican government to close their borders, especially to the United States. This tactic was not as well-received in the United States, however, because they were hesitant to the idea of border closure due to trade decimation.

The White House Friday highlighted a new multi-million-dollar technology fund for Muslim nations, following a pledge made by President Barack Obama in his landmark speech to the Islamic world. The White House said the US Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) had issued a call for proposals for the fund, which will provide financing of between 25 and 150 million dollars for selected projects and funds.

Social Security To Make It Official: Prescription Cost Increases But No Cost Of Living Adjustments For Seniors Under Obama
The Social Security Administration makes it official Thursday: There will be no cost of living increase for Social Security recipients next year, the first year without one since automatic adjustments were adopted in 1975. The announcement comes as President Barack Obama and key members of Congress call for a second round of $250 payments to more than 50 million seniors, veterans, retired railroad workers and people with disabilities. The payments would be equal to about a 2 percent increase for the average Social Security recipient. The cost: $13 billion. Obama called on Congress Wednesday to approve the payments, and several key members of Congress said they would. "This additional assistance will be especially important in the coming months, as countless seniors and others have seen their retirement accounts and home values decline as a result of this economic crisis," Obama said in a statement.

Virtual Fence, Real Disaster
The project was supposed to be stone-simple: “basically cameras on a pole,” in the words of one congressman. Boeing would tweak some off-the-shelf surveillance gear to create a so-called “virtual fence” along the U.S.-Mexican border. The whole thing would be done by early 2009. Well, that date has come and gone for SBINet, the cameras-on-a-pole project. The new deadline is 2016. When it’s all done, Boeing hopes, the revised system will be able to have an detection rate of 70 percent. But that assumes SBINet can overcome its issues seeing in the wind and rain. Defense News documents the latest SBINet atrocities. Perhaps the most maddening thing is that the project’s plain ol’ fencing isn’t working much better than its virtual one. Along the 630 miles of old-school barriers meant to stop cars and pedestrians, “there have been about 3,300 breaches in the fence, and it costs us about $1,300 every time that we have to repair them.”

History Revisionism? Darker Side Of Christopher Columbus Emerges In US Classrooms
Jeffrey Kolowith's kindergarten students read a poem about Christopher Columbus, take a journey to the New World on three paper ships and place the explorer's picture on a timeline through history. Kolowith's students learn about the explorer's significance _ though they also come away with a more nuanced picture of Columbus than the noble discoverer often portrayed in pop culture and legend. "I talk about the situation where he didn't even realize where he was," Kolowith said. "And we talked about how he was very, very mean, very bossy." Columbus' stature in U.S. classrooms has declined somewhat through the years, and many districts will not observe his namesake holiday on Monday. Although lessons vary, many teachers are trying to present a more balanced perspective of what happened after Columbus reached the Caribbean and the suffering of indigenous populations.

Only Room For One Messiah In Washington, And Jesus Ain't Him: Federal Government Bans Religious References On Ornaments For 2009 Capitol Christmas Tree
Alliance Defense Fund attorneys sent a letter to federal and state officials, including Arizona Governor Janice Brewer Monday, calling for them to stop enforcing a requirement prohibiting the state’s schoolchildren from expressing religious viewpoints through Christmas themes while decorating ornaments for the 2009 Capitol Christmas Tree.  Arizona was chosen this year to present 4,000 handcrafted ornaments made by elementary, middle-school, and high-school students to decorate Washington, D.C.’s annual Christmas tree. “Banning Christmas from the Capitol Christmas tree is just absurd.  Christian students shouldn’t be discriminated against for expressing their religious beliefs,” said ADF Litigation Staff Counsel Jonathan Scruggs.  “The First Amendment does not allow government officials to exclude schoolchildren’s ornaments for the capitol’s Christmas tree merely because they communicate a religious viewpoint.”

Obamacare: Buy Health Insurance Or Go To Jail?
If we are not careful, health care reform will become the convenient excuse to permit government intrusion into almost every aspect of our lives. Now, it appears that it may even become a matter of criminal law. From the story: "Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) received a handwritten note Thursday from Joint Committee on Taxation Chief of Staff Tom Barthold confirming the penalty for failing to pay the up to $1,900 fee for not buying health insurance. Violators could be charged with a misdemeanor and could face up to a year in jail or a $25,000 penalty, Barthold wrote on JCT letterhead." That kind of coercion is a problem for me: Requiring everyone to buy insurance is intended to keep premiums down by spreading the risk to the young and healthy who will need fewer services.  But legally mandating that everyone buy insurance is not only of questionable constitutionality, but comes at the significant cost of increased bureaucracy, government intrusiveness, and unnuanced heavy handedness.

Obamacare: Death Panels By Proxy
Most of the focus in the Obamacare debate has been on HB 3200. But Senator Max Baucus (D-MT) has been trying to forge a compromise package. Instead, he has upset both sides, the Left because it has no public option and the Right because it too contains provisions that would, in the name of cost cutting, put the expensive for whom to care at great medical hazard. A Washington Times editorial points out one provision that I have been meaning to address.  It seems that physicians who spend the top 10% in caring for patients each year will see their compensation reduced–no matter the cause!  From the editorial: Yes, there are death panels. Its members won’t even know whose deaths they are causing. But under the health care bill sponsored by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, Montana Democrat, death panels will indeed exist – oh so cleverly disguised as accountants. The offending provision is on Pages 80-81 of the unamended Baucus bill, hidden amid a lot of similar legislative mumbo-jumbo about Medicare payments to doctors. The key sentence: “Beginning in 2015, payment would be reduced by five percent if an aggregation of the physician’s resource use is at or above the 90th percentile of national utilization.” Translated into plain English, it means that in any year in which a particular doctor’s average per-patient Medicare costs are in the top 10 percent in the nation, the feds will cut the doctor’s payments by 5 percent.

US Sends 2 New "Missile Defense" Satellites Into Orbit
Two satellites are heading to orbit as part of a missile defense program demonstration. The pair was launched aboard a Delta 2 rocket on Friday morning as part of the Space Tracking and Surveillance System demonstration for the U.S. Missile Defense Agency. According to Bob Bishop, media relations manager for satellite developer Northrop Grumman, the satellites will demonstrate technology that can detect infrared and visible light from missiles launched from earth. The space surveillance system will provide global tracking for the ballistic missile defense system. Data from the satellites' onboard sensors will be used by the military to intercept missile targets.

Investigation Into Possible Terror Plot Prompts FBI To Warn Mass-Transit Systems Around U.S., Looking For Dozen People
In the two bulletins -- sent to police departments Monday and obtained by The Associated Press -- officials said they know of no specific plots against such sites, but urged law enforcement and private companies to be vigilant. These two bulletins followed on the heels of a similar warning about the vulnerabilities of mass transit systems. The bulletin on stadiums notes that an al-Qaida training manual specifically lists "blasting and destroying the places of amusement, immorality, and sin... and attacking vital economic centers" as desired targets of the global terror network. The FBI said they found notes on bomb-making instructions that appear to match the handwriting of Najibullah Zazi, a 24-year-old Afghanistan immigrant who investigators have said is a key figure behind the terror threats. Investigators discovered his fingerprints on materials -- batteries and a scale -- that could be used to make explosives. He also made a trip to Pakistan last year in which he received al-Qaida explosives and weapons training, the government said.

Newsweek: The Hunt Is On For A Hidden Bomb Factory
Days after local police and federal agents busted up an alleged terror plot targeting public transportation in the New York area, law enforcement and counterterrorism officials still aren't sure if they have captured all of the suspects who might have been in on the plan.... Counterterrorism officials familiar with intelligence reports related to the investigation say that investigators can't link the alleged U.S. plot to Al Qaeda's core leaders, such as Osama bin Laden and his deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri. The officials said it's more likely the camp where Zazi allegedly trained was operated by Al Qaeda supporters or affiliates, such as Pakistan-based militant factions connected to the territorial rivalry between Pakistan and India in the disputed border region of Kashmir. Four government officials familiar with the investigation, all of whom asked for anonymity because of the continuing inquiry, say they believe there are similarities between the explosives recipes and schematics found on the seized computer and materials used in the design and manufacture of homemade bombs used to attack the London public-transportation system on July 7 and July 21, 2005.

Rice Predicts Another 9-11
Former US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice has said that the United States could experience another terrorist attack like 9/11 if troops are withdrawn from Afghanistan. "If you want another terrorist attack in the US, abandon Afghanistan," she said in an interview with Fortune magazine on Tuesday. "The last time we left Afghanistan, and we abandoned Pakistan, that territory became the very territory on which al-Qaeda trained and attacked us on September 11th. So our national security interests are very much tied up in not letting Afghanistan fail again and become a safe haven for terrorists," Rice added. President Barack Obama is considering his options after the US commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, said on Monday that extra troops are needed within the next year or else the war "will likely result in failure."

In a letter from the Justice Department to the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Obama administration has gone on record for the first time supporting the extension of key provisions of the USA Patriot Act, including the notorious provision that gives the federal government the power to subpoena library records of any individual. Several provisions of the Patriot Act, legislation adopted in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks that grants sweeping surveillance powers to US intelligence agencies, are scheduled to expire December 31, unless renewed by Congress. The House and Senate judiciary committees have scheduled hearings next week on the proposed reauthorizations. In a letter to Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, chairman of the Senate panel, sent Monday and reported in the press Wednesday, Assistant Attorney General Ronald Weich argues for reauthorization of three expiring sections of the Patriot Act...

Fifty Questions On 9/11
It's September 11 all over again - eight years on. The George W Bush administration is out. The "global war on terror" is still on, renamed "overseas contingency operations" by the Barack Obama administration. Obama's "new strategy" - a war escalation - is in play in AfPak. Osama bin Laden may be dead or not. "Al-Qaeda" remains a catch-all ghost entity. September 11 - the neo-cons' "new Pearl Harbor" - remains the darkest jigsaw puzzle of the young 21st century. It's useless to expect US corporate media and the ruling elites' political operatives to call for a true, in-depth investigation into the attacks on the US on September 11, 2001. Whitewash has been the norm. But even establishment highlight Dr Zbig "Grand Chessboard" Brzezinski, a former national security advisor, has admitted to the US Senate that the post-9/11 "war on terror" is a "mythical historical narrative". The following questions, some multi-part - and most totally ignored by the 9/11 Commission - are just the tip of the immense 9/11 iceberg. A hat tip goes to the indefatigable work of 911truth.org; whatreallyhappened.com; architects and engineers for 9/11 truth; the Italian documentary Zero: an investigation into 9/11; and Asia Times Online readers' e-mails.

Obama Extends Bush 9/11 National Emergency
U.S. President Barack Obama has extended the state of emergency put in place by President George W. Bush following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act, 50 U.S.C. 1622(d), provides for the automatic termination of a national emergency unless, prior to the anniversary date of its declaration, the President publishes in the Federal Register and transmits to the Congress a notice stating that the emergency is to continue. President Obama says consistent with this provision, he has sent a notice to the Federal Register stating that the emergency declared with respect to the terrorist attacks on the United States of September 11, 2001, is to continue for an additional year. He said the terrorist threat that led to President Bush declaring a national emergency on September 14, 2001 continues, and for this reason it is necessary to continue the national emergency in effect after September 14, 2009. "Consistent with section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act, 50 U.S.C. 1622(d), I am continuing for 1 year the national emergency declared on September 14, 2001, in Proclamation 7463, with respect to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and the continuing and immediate threat of further attacks on the United States," the President said.

Patriots To Storm Washington, Target Out-Of-Control Spending
Just one day after President Obama plans tries to recapture the initiative in the health-care debate with a speech to a joint session of Congress, thousands of taxpayers plan to storm Washington, D.C., in a three-day event to take their fight against excessive spending, bailouts, growth of big government and soaring deficits to the front door of the U.S. Capitol. In a major movement unaffiliated with – but inspired by – Fox News' Glenn Beck's 9-12 Project, called the National Taxpayer Protest, thousands of Americans are answering the call and traveling to make their voices heard at Capitol Hill. Sept. 10 marks the kickoff of the three-day march on Washington. Brendan Steinhauser of FreedomWorks, one of the groups organizing the Sept. 12 event, told WND, "We're expecting a huge gathering at the Washington, D.C., armory in the morning, and we'll talk about bailouts, cap and trade and health care. Senator Predicts 'Doomsday' For US: America Has 16 Months To Stop Obamageddon Before Reaching Point Of No Return
A senior US senator has predicted a doomsday scenario for America under the leadership of President Barack Obama unless his powers are curbed. Senior Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe has slammed the current US administration under Obama and called for a reversal of the president's socialist government polices that have 'stripped America of whatever it has'. Speaking amongst a gathering of GOP, the Republican Party, supporters on Wednesday, the anti-Obama vocal lawmaker said that unless the opposition minority reclaims authority in Washington's corridors of power within 16 months, the country would suffer from irredeemable consequences. “I never dreamed I would see an administration try to disavow all the things that have made this country different from all others,” the outspoken critic of Obama's 'over-centralized' government told in a town hall meeting at the Grove Community Center in Oklahoma. “I have never seen so many things happening at one time so disheartening to America. Every institution that has made this country the greatest nation in the world is under attack.”

Summer Of Our Discontent: Why Is America So Angry?
At the dawn of the Barack Obama era, the promise of hope has faded. America's public square is an angry and bitter place. Finger pointing and yelling at town hall meetings this summer are signs of a country that's been building toward a boiling point for several years, stressed by a fast changing economy, a flood of immigration and threats at home by terrorists. It's a land at turns frustrated and irate at a government that led them into an unpopular war, proved itself inept at helping its citizens in a disastrous hurricane, presided over an historic economic collapse, then went on a spending spree that could commit their country to decades of crushing debt. Untold numbers of Americans seethe with anger at Obama and his fellow Democrats, resentment coupled with fear even more intense than the rage other Americans expressed just a year ago at George W. Bush and the Republicans. One telling sign: The comparisons of the president to Hitler remain the same — only the face has changed from Bush to Obama.

American Girlhood Lost To Marketers
I finally had to sit down with my 11-year-old daughter for “the talk.” Despite my best efforts to preserve her innocence and protect her from growing up too quickly, I simply had to tell her some important facts of life. No, we didn’t have a talk about how babies are born. This talk was about America’s assault on girlhood. The time finally came for me to explain to my daughter the relationship between media and marketing and money, and why some people think nothing of exploiting girls if it increases their ratings, sells advertising and beefs up the bottom line. It’s a conversation I wish I could have avoided, but unfortunately Miley Cyrus’ recent performance at the “Teen Choice Awards” forced my parental hand. And anyway, I’m not one to waste a teachable moment. If you don’t know, Ms. Cyrus made headlines for her performance of a poll dance during the telecast of the “Teen Choice Awards,” one of those faux awards shows designed to sell commercials to corporate sponsors who want more opportunities to reach America’s children. The awards themselves are simply popularity contests to determine teenager’s favorite singers, movie stars, athletes, deranged, drug-addicted celebrities… you get the drift.

Chip Pickering, R-Miss., who allegedly rendezvoused at the C Street House with his mistress, an executive in the industry for which he then became a lobbyist; and Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev. Although Sanford declared today that his scandal will actually turn out to be good for the people of South Carolina because he's now more firmly in God's control, the once-favored GOP presidential prospect will finish out his term and fade away. And Ensign's residence at the C Street House during his own extramarital affair now threatens to end a career that he and other Republicans hoped would lead him to the White House.

U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy Dies At Age 77
U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy, a towering figure in the Democratic Party who took the helm of one of America's most fabled political families after two older brothers were assassinated, died at age 77, his family said. "Edward M. Kennedy, the husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle we loved so deeply, died late Tuesday night at home in Hyannis Port (Massachusetts)," the Kennedy family said in a statement early on Wednesday. One of the most influential and longest-serving senators in U.S. history -- a liberal standard-bearer who was also known as a consummate congressional dealmaker -- Kennedy had been battling brain cancer, which was diagnosed in May 2008. His death marked the twilight of a political dynasty and dealt a blow to Democrats as they seek to answer President Barack Obama's call for an overhaul of the healthcare system.

You're (Probably) a Federal Criminal
With all the attention that's been paid lately to long federal sentences for drug offenders, it's surprising that a far more troubling phenomenon has barely hit the media's radar screen. Every year, thousands of upstanding, responsible Americans run afoul of some incomprehensible federal law or regulation and end up serving time in federal prison. What is especially disturbing is that it could happen to anyone at all -- and it has.

O'S BROKEN PROMISES
Obama promises that "if you like your health plan, you can keep it," even after he reforms our health-care system. That's untrue. The bills now before Congress would force you to switch to a managed-care plan with limits on your access to specialists and tests.

US to add 22,000 troops to army
The US Army will "temporarily" increase its size by 22,000 soldiers for the next three years, Defence Secretary Robert Gates has announced. The additional troops are intended to ease the strain of the US's deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, Mr Gates said. The extra manpower will raise the total number of active US soldiers from 547,000 to 569,000.

Governors Fear Medicaid Costs in Health Plan
The nation's governors, Democrats as well as Republicans, voiced deep concern Sunday about the shape of the health care plan emerging from Congress, fearing that Washington was about to hand them expensive new Medicaid obligations without money to pay for them. ..."I think the governors would all agree that what we don't want from the federal government is unfunded mandates," said Gov. Jim Douglas of Vermont, a Republican, the group's incoming chairman. "We can't have the Congress impose requirements that we are forced to absorb beyond our capacity to do so."

Obama: Now is time to change health care
President Barack Obama told the nation Saturday his health care overhaul is financially sound, but a new analysis by congressional budget experts of emerging House legislation said it would increase deficits by $239 billion over a decade. "I want to be very clear: I will not sign on to any health plan that adds to our deficits over the next decade," the president said in his weekly address.

US destroyer anchors off Georgia for exercises  <- FEATURE!!!
A U.S. guided missile destroyer dropped anchor Tuesday in Georgia's Black Sea waters ahead of joint naval exercises seen as a show of American support for the former Soviet nation crushed in last year's war with Russia. The exercises came one day after Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's first visit to South Ossetia, a breakaway Georgian region that Russia recognized as independent in the conflict's aftermath. Both events reflect how far apart Russia and the United States remain over Washington's support for the former Soviet nation of Georgia, despite last week's cordial Moscow summit between Medvedev and President Barack Obama.

U.S. jobless rate seen highest since 1983  <- FEATURE!!!
The U.S. economy likely shed a further 355,000 jobs in June and the unemployment rate hit a 26-year high, but for a nation mired in its deepest recession since at least World War Two that may be good news. The U.S. Labor Department's report due on Thursday is expected to depict an economy still wallowing in recession but confirm that the pace of job loss has slowed, which would suggest the 18-month-old recession is easing its grip.

The question itself seems perverse. For in spite of the hostility to Israel in certain American quarters, this country has more often than not been the beleaguered Jewish state’s only friend in the face of threats coming from others. Deadly Dangers of Heparin!!! (by David Mayer)
One example of what is wrong with the drug industry in America came to light with the use of a blood thinner called heparin. In April 2008, the FDA said that sixty-two people died and over eight hundred had severe allergic reactions after they were given heparin. Almost all heparin is made in Red China in small factories sitting among the vegetable and fruit fields in Red China. Heparin is literally squeezed from pig guts. It is derived from the mucus wrung and washed from pig intestines and other organs. This product is then shipped to the United States, where the biggest distributor of heparin to hospitals is Baxter International Inc. of Deerfield, Illinois. When FDA inspectors finally got around to inspecting the Chinese workshops that produced the extract, they found scratched metal tanks with an unidentified substance sticking to the sides of them. The sad fact is that 40% of all pharmaceuticals and 80% of the chemicals used in drugs are imported, mostly from Red China, India, and Mexico.
